The Panguni Brahmotsavam at Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore is a nine-day annual festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Panguni, which corresponds to mid-March to mid-April. The festival is also known as Panguni Peruvila or the Spring festival. It features various events like flag hoisting (dhvajarohanam), chariot festival (terotsavam), the Arupathimoovar festival (celebrating 63 saints), and concludes with the Tirukkalyanam (marriage of the deities).
Key aspects of the Panguni Brahmotsavam:
Dhvajarohanam:
The festival begins with the hoisting of the temple flag.
Terotsavam:
A prominent feature is the chariot festival, where the deities are taken in procession on a golden chariot.
Arupathimoovar Festival:
This event celebrates the 63 Saiva saints, with a special bathing ceremony (abhishekam) of their bronze idols. A reenactment of the goddess's return to life (Poompavai) is also performed, according to Bhushavali.
Tirukkalyanam:
The festival culminates with the marriage of Kapaleeswarar and Karpagambal.
Rishaba Vahanam:
On the fifth day, Kapaleeswarar is carried on a silver Rishaba (bull), and Karpagambal on a golden Rishaba, while Karthikeya is on a golden peacock according to Bhushavali.
Arupathimoovar Parade:
A grand parade of the 63 saints through the streets of Mylapore is a highlight of the festival.
