Living from Rest: Rediscovering the Sabbath
In a world that never slows down, many of us find ourselves weary—busy but drained, connected but spiritually dry. God, in His wisdom, gave us a rhythm of life that helps us stay grounded and renewed. It’s called the Sabbath.
Sabbath isn’t just an Old Testament law or a day off work. It’s a holy rhythm built into creation. Genesis 2:2–3 says that after six days of creating, God rested. He didn’t stop because He was tired—He stopped to delight in His work, to enjoy what He had made. He blessed that day and made it holy, setting the pattern for us to follow.
1. Sabbath Is About Stopping
The word Sabbath means “to stop” or “cease.” It’s a weekly invitation to step out of the grind and remember that we’re not defined by our productivity. In Exodus 16, God told the Israelites to gather enough manna on the sixth day so they could rest on the seventh. Some still went out to gather more—and found nothing. God was teaching them to trust Him to provide, even when they weren’t working.
Today, we’re often tempted to believe we can’t afford to stop. There’s too much to do, too many needs. But Sabbath is God’s way of saying, “I’ve got this. Rest.”
2. Sabbath Is a Day Set Apart
Exodus 16:23 calls it “a holy Sabbath to the Lord.” This isn’t just time off—it’s time with God. It’s a space carved out to reconnect with Him, to re-center our hearts and realign our lives. Sabbath slows us down so we can hear His voice again.
Without rest, even good things—ministry, work, family life—can leave us depleted. Sabbath reminds us that we are not what we do. We are deeply loved children of God. And in resting, we make space for that truth to sink in.
3. Sabbath Is About Presence
God didn’t just command Sabbath; He gifted it. Exodus 31:17 says that God “rested and was refreshed.” The Hebrew word used here means “breathed in.” For six days, God spoke creation into being. On the seventh, He inhaled.
Sabbath is our time to inhale—God’s presence, peace, and joy. It’s a day to stop rushing and to be present: with God, with others, and even with ourselves. It’s a day to listen, to breathe, to delight. When we practice this regularly, it reawakens joy in our souls.
4. Sabbath Leads to Joy and Renewal
God designed Sabbath as a rhythm of physical rest and spiritual replenishment. Without it, we slowly run dry—emotionally, mentally, even spiritually. We lose clarity. We forget our identity. We become reactive, weary, and disconnected. But when we honor Sabbath, we are renewed. Our hearts grow lighter. Our minds reset. We begin to delight again—in God, in creation, in people, in the simple gifts of life.
This is not about legalism or guilt. It’s about grace. Sabbath is God’s gift—a weekly reminder that we are not alone, not in control, and not without hope. It’s a sacred pause that helps us stay in step with His Spirit.
An Invitation to Rest: If your soul feels hurried, worn out, or spiritually numb, consider this your invitation: return to rest. Try setting aside one day a week to slow down, unplug, and focus your heart on God. Don’t fill it with tasks. Don’t turn it into another to-do list. Let it be holy. Let it be enough.
Breathe in His peace. Delight in His goodness. Trust His provision. And let Sabbath become not just a day on your calendar—but a rhythm that restores your soul.
