The Ghassanids or al-Ghasāsina/Jafniyūn were an Arabic Christian tribal confederacy led by the Ghassanid dynasty before Islam, during the 3rd-7th centuries AD (≈ 220-638 AD). The Ghassanid kingdom was located in the region of modern day north Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel & Palestine. Through their reign the Ghassanids became close allies to the (Eastern/ Byzantine) Roman Empire against the Sassanid (Sassanian) Persians and their Lakhmid allies, they even became governors of the Roman third Province of Palestine, however instead of following the Roman Orthodox church the Ghassanids would follow Miaphysite Christianity. The Ghassanid dynasty & kingdom were a mix of Roman and Arab influence and their legacy would remain in the religion, culture, law and history of the Middle East for a long time, from Antiquity through Medieval times to today, showing the importance of early Arabic history and of the Arabs even before Islam, in pre-islamic times.
