The Release Mode button gives you access to settings that control what happens when the shutter button is pressed. Your camera may not have a button for this, but you can access release mode controls via a lever or within the information menu depending on your Nikon DSLR model.
In the Release Mode menu of my D3500, there are 4 options: single frame, continuous (burst mode), quiet shutter release, and self-timer. Your camera may have different options.
Single frame is self-explanatory. If you select this, your camera will take a single shot when you press the shutter button.
In continuous release mode, the camera will take multiple shots with each shutter button press. This setting is perfect for wildlife photography. Taking multiple shots with one shutter button press makes you less likely to miss the action. If I keep my finger on the shutter button, the camera will continue to take photos until either I take my finger off the button, or the buffer fills up; at which point the rate of shutter actuations slows down or stops completely.
The buffer is temporary memory inside your camera where images are stored before being written to the SD card. The size of this buffer affects how many photos your camera can take one after another.
Quiet Shutter Release is not found in all Nikon DSLR cameras. It is not a mute button for your camera. It is designed to reduce the noise created when taking a photo at a concert or similar event.
Self-timer delays the shutter release by a certain duration. On the D3500, I can set the duration within the Setup Menu under Self-timer. The options are 2, 5, 10, or 20 seconds. This mode is perfect for taking photos of yourself as you can press the shutter button and make your way into the photo before the shutter fires. It’s also good for landscape photography or other situations where you don’t want to touch the camera and cause vibrations.
