On the morning of November 27, 1978, disgruntled former City Supervisor Dan White entered San Francisco City Hall through a basement window to avoid metal detectors. He went to the Mayor's office and shot Mayor George Moscone, then walked down the hall and killed Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California. The assassinations devastated the city. White's controversial legal defense—claiming a sugary diet made him unstable (the so-called "Twinkie Defense")—led to a lenient verdict that sparked massive riots.
