Dr. Sean Mulvaney talks with Jane Dickerson of the Trauma Sensitive Awareness Foundation about how Stellate Ganglion Block works to help the nervous system cope better after trauma and PTS and C-PTS. Our bodies and nervous system are built for temporary stress with the fight & flight (and freeze) response. When we perceive a threat or stressor, our nervous system gets ready to fight/flight/freeze and our neurochemistry changes. However, when a traumatic event happens, sometimes people get stuck in this loop. And when trauma repeats or multiple traumas happen, some people develop complex post traumatic stress (C-PTS) and start to perceive every day noises and people in their lives as threats and stressors as well. SGB is a shot to the nerves in the neck that helps reset the nervous system. Most people respond to one treatment, and some people need the shot on each side of their neck to fully reset the nervous system and break the repetitive fight/flight/freeze loop. A handful of clients may need to return after a few years for an additional shot because they are living in a situation where triggers still exist, or a need a follow up shot after another traumatic event later in life. SGB is a treatment for the physical symptoms of anxiety and PTS/C-PTS but other therapy and therapeutic practices are still needed to help address healthy coping mechanisms for the future.
