With five honorees in the audience, Henrico County held its inaugural Centenarian Celebration to salute residents who have reached or surpassed their 100th birthdays.
The event, held Sept. 22 at the Henrico Theatre, was coordinated with National Centenarian's Day. It brought together and shared the stories and experiences of residents Shirley Morrow, 100; Robert Polich, 100; Frances Bailey, 101; Robert Hall, 101; and Laura Thomas-Rice, 104.
Given the attention and so many memories, Bailey acknowledged that there’s a lot she could say. She grew up in New York and worked as a wedding director, coordinating more than 200 ceremonies. Instead, she added simply, “I think it’s wonderful. Y’all have just done super!”
Henrico has 153 centenarians, according to the Social Security Administration.
“We can benefit from your life’s lessons, your secrets to longevity, good health and lives filled with purpose and meaning,” Tuckahoe District Supervisor Jody K. Rogish told the honorees. “We want Henrico County to be the best place to live no matter what age you are.”
