Location: Kledang-Sayong Forest Reserve, Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia
Habitat: A ‘damaged’ trail along primary jungle
Date: 25th July 2016
Equipment: Nikon D7100 SLR with Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD, handheld
Remarks
I was surprised to find some of the jungle bamboo seeding very early in season at one site with a number of species feeding. The bamboo seeds on the inflorescence were reached with some ‘acrobatics’. I took the opportunity to do some short videos of the feeding behaviour. The fruit of the bamboo is described as an indehiscent, a one seed caryopsis. It is eaten by some indigenous communities and in time of need; considered a delicacy by some. If you watch the video the birds appear to be ‘crunching’ on the outer casing to gain access to the inner seed. Once obtained the outer husk is discarded.
