This period piece may be a time-capsule from a bygone era, but viewers are sure to find some similarities with today's Kelley Park. Most likely a student project, filmed and narrated by Skylair Sambor, this film was donated to History San Jose by the San Jose Parks & Recreation Department, and in turn digitized by the California Pioneers for our Pioneers Film Archive
"A Day At Kelly (sic) Park" shows the wonders and wow-factor of San Jose's playground in the early seventies. The Japanese Friendship Garden, a gesture of friendship and solidarity with sister city Okayama, Japan, is shown here in its prime. Happy Hollow shows off its old charm, with its Falstaff-sponsored viking ship and new paddle-wheeler. Crowd favorite Danny The Dragon is still delighting children forty years later. The Leninger Community Center survives as the city's park reservations center, but the San Jose Zoo is no more, having merged with Happy Hollow later in '72. San Jose Historical Museum was later privatized and became History San Jose, and many of the wagons, tractors, and artifacts you see here are still in their collections, on display to the public in the same location at Senter and Phelan in San Jose. History Park itself, however, is markedly improved, with the addition of numerous historic structures and the partnership of multiple museums and historical societies, including the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County.
