Colesberg is a historic town in the Northern Cape, situated right on the N1 national route roughly halfway between Cape Town and Johannesburg, making it a popular stop-over for travelers and long-distance road trips.
Colesberg was established in 1830 and named after Sir Lowry Cole, then Governor of the Cape of Good Hope.
The town lies in the semi-desert Karoo veld, surrounded by characteristic koppies (small hills), the most famous being Coleskop, nicknamed the “Magic Mountain” because it seems to stay the same distance away as you travel toward it.
History
The area was originally inhabited by hunter-gatherer communities before European settlers and mission stations arrived in the early 19th century.
It saw significant action during the Second Anglo-Boer War with battles and skirmishes in the region.
Well-preserved 19th-century Karoo architecture can be seen in historic buildings and homes throughout town.
Because of its ideal location halfway on one of South Africa’s busiest long-distance roads (N1), Colesberg is a popular stop-over town for travelers heading between Gauteng and the Western Cape, offering guesthouses, hotels, and B&Bs, as well as local eateries and historic places to explore.

Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk - Colesberg
This is the main Dutch Reformed (Nederduitse Gereformeerde) Church in Colesberg, located on Charl Cilliers Street in the heart of town.
The NG Kerk Colesberg congregation is one of the oldest in South Africa — founded on 10 December 1826 by Rev. Andrew Murray from Graaff-Reinet, originally known as the congregation of Torenberg.
It’s the 18th oldest NG congregation in the country, and because church synodal boundaries differ from provincial ones, it’s counted as the fifth oldest in the Synod of the Eastern Cape despite being in the Northern Cape.
The church building itself was constructed later in the 19th century and dominates Church Street with its classic white walls and traditional architecture.
Northern Cape South Africa
Set prominently in Colesberg’s historic centre, the church is a distinctive 19th-century building, reflecting the early settlement history and religious heritage of the town.
A clock tower was added in 1926 to commemorate the congregation’s centenary; the tower and overall design give the church a landmark presence that you’ll notice when riding through town.
