Home-seeking, or oikophilia, was coined by English philosopher, Roger Scruton, to describe the deep emotional and moral attachment to a place and the way of life it supports.
In honour of JRR Tolkien (1892-1973), who speaks here about how he experienced life in rural middle England.
'It bites into your memory and imagination, even if you don't think it has.
Then, to have, just at the age, of imagination opening up, suddenly to find yourself in a quiet Warwickshire village...
I think it engenders a particular love of, what you might call central midland English countryside, based on good water stones and elm trees, small quiet rivers, and so on. And of course, (sort of) rustic people there.
It bites into your memory and imagination, even if you don't think it has.'
Many thanks to Ken Backhouse and Mike Hewitt for their invaluable contributions.
