In this VLOG I discuss how Dutch Jewish migration led to the 8 hour work day. Sephardic Jews began arriving into the Netherlands in the 16th century from mostly Portugal and Spain but by the 17th century Ashkenazi Jews began coming into the Netherlands as well. The communities did quite well and grew in size but by the mid-19th century there was a large migration of Dutch Jews to the East End of London. While Dutch Jews had been migrating back and forth between London and the Netherlands, this migration of Dutch Jews in the 19th century, nicknamed Chuts, were a unique group among the Jews in London and the East End. Many migrated for economic opportunities and worked some sort of craft job, with cigar making being one of the top trades among these Dutch Jews. A large portion of this migration settled in certain areas of the East End due to the closeness to the Tobacco Dock on Wapping Lane. London wasn't always the last stop of this migration of Jews out of the Netherlands in the 19th century, many would continue on to the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

One member of this migration was Samuel Gompers, who had been born to immigrant parents in London. Samuel worked in the cigar factories at a young age but the family soon moved to America where Samuel continued working as a cigar maker. In America Samuel joined a union and soon found himself rising up the ranks to become a leader in the Union. In 1886 Samuel was part of founding the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and he was elected as the first President of the organization. As president of the AFL, Samuel led the fight for the 8-hour work day along with a few other ideals which shaped the future of the American labor movement. Due to his influence, Samuel Gompers has become the face of the American labor movement but his family's experiences from Amsterdam, London, and America shaped many of Samuel's ideals which then shaped the history of American labor.
