২০১০ সালের মার্চে ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়ার আশুগঞ্জ নৌ-বন্দরকে পূর্ণাঙ্গ বন্দর হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে সরকার। এরপর ২০১১ সালে প্রতিবেশী দেশ ভারত প্রথমবারের মতো নৌ-বন্দরটি ব্যবহার করে ত্রিপুরা বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রের মালামাল পরিবহন করে।
