Why I Upgraded My Cessna 172: Selling the Old Engine

Описание: I’m selling my Continental O-300D engine from my Cessna 172 (23U), and I wanted to share the details here for anyone interested in picking up a solid legacy engine with plenty of useful life left.

This engine has been the heart of my flying for the last 8 years, and it’s time for it to go to a new home as we upgrade to a modern, higher horsepower STC’d IO-370 from Stoots Aviation. The O-300D is a classic Continental opposed-cylinder engine that powered generations of 172s, and while these engines are slowly becoming rarer, they’re still highly valued among owners keeping their aircraft flying.

This sale includes not only the O-300D engine (approx. 1,400 hrs), but also several extras, modifications, and key parts that add real value. Whether you’re looking for spares, a project engine, or a complete setup with prop and spinner, this is a well-maintained package.

Located in Homer, Alaska, I can work with local pickup, Anchorage drop-off, or shipping arrangements anywhere in the U.S.

I’ll also provide full logbooks and records, as well as additional details on request.

• New starter
• Alternator conversion (STC’d)
• No vacuum pump (aircraft has TAA/modern instruments)

• Oil quick drain
• Oil filter adapter
• Tanis heater
• Primer, mixture, and throttle cables (different lengths, may not suit new setups)

Propeller Assembly
• Propeller (on TCDS, plenty of life left, well-maintained, minimal gravel wear, could use light cosmetic paint)
• Front bulkhead

• Spinner

Additional
• Exhaust system
• Various STC’d add-ons
• Miscellaneous hardware and accessories
• Engine is mounted on an Alaska Bushwheel stand for storage

📦 Buyer Notes & Extras
• Logbooks: Full logs available for review.
• Shipping: Local pickup in Homer, AK, Anchorage drop-off, or shipping anywhere in the lower 48.
• Condition: Engine was grounded during routine inspection (intake leak on #6, cracked lifters). No in-flight failure. Still lots of usable parts and value.
• Upgrades: I recommend looking into modern options like the Stoots IO-370 STC for long-term ownership, though the O-300D is still a solid choice for enthusiasts and restorers.
