Founded by poets Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg—because who better to start a band than two guys who specialized in countercultural anarchy?—The Fugs turned folk, rock, and beat poetry into a surreal protest soundtrack. Songs like Slum Goddess, I Couldn't Get High, and Nothing deliver a mix of absurdity, anti-establishment rage, and, let’s be honest, some questionable musicianship.

Despite (or because of) their raw sound and unapologetic political satire, The Fugs influenced everyone from punk pioneers to experimental rock legends. Frank Zappa took notes. The Sex Pistols wished they had this level of audacity. Even modern indie weirdos owe them a debt.
