Rhode Island historian Christian McBurney has written the first in-depth book on the Battle of Rhode Island, perhaps the most unheralded major battle of the American Revolution. The August, 1778, conflagration on Aquidneck Island pitted the 8,000 - man British Army of occupation, including Hessian mercenaries and American loyalists, against a similar sized force of American continental army soldiers and New England militiamen.
One of the most interesting facets of the battle was the outstanding performance of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, composed largely of enslaved people promised freedom for their service.

McBurney, a lawyer, native Rhode Islander, and author of several other books on R.I. history, runs an outstanding weekly blog on Rhode Island history called SmallStateBigHistory.com.
