A suspected gas explosion ignited a massive four-alarm fire in a Bronx high-rise overnight, killing at least one person and injuring more than a dozen others.
Fire crews say flames erupted from the upper floors of a NYCHA apartment building just after midnight, forcing the evacuation of over 150 households as thick smoke poured from multiple windows.
One resident was pronounced dead at the scene, while 14 others were taken to nearby hospitals — including one person in critical condition. Dramatic video captured residents signaling for help from the top floors as first responders rushed in during freezing temperatures.
More than 230 firefighters and emergency personnel battled the blaze as officials confirmed gas odors had been reported shortly before the explosion. The cause remains under investigation.
