Secondo la tradizione sarebbe giunta a Tindari nell’ VIII secolo d. C. per mezzo di una nave di ritorno dall’Oriente, che nascondeva nella stiva la statua per sottrarla alla furia iconoclasta. Essa navigava a largo della costa siciliana, sul Tirreno, quando un’improvvisa tempesta minacciò di farla naufragare. L’imbarcazione trovò così rifugio a Tindari. Al momento di ripartire, però, la nave sembrava essersi fatta troppo pesante per poter salpare. I marinai allora provarono ad alleggerire il carico, ma solo dopo aver lasciato la statua della Madonna riuscirono a prendere il largo. La Madonna è attualmente celebrata con una grande festa il 7 settembre. Sotto il promontorio si estende la Laguna di Oliveri, detta anche di Tindari. È una lingua di sabbia di eccezionale bellezza oggi riserva naturalistica per la presenza di un caratteristico ambiente salmastro di tipo lacustre con sabbie marine. È meta anche dei turisti che si recano alla spiaggia di Marinello che, secondo una leggenda, si sarebbe formata per volontà della Vergine per salvare una bambina caduta dal promontorio del santuario.

According to tradition, it arrived in Tindari in the 8th century AD by means of a ship returning from the East, which hid the statue in the hold to protect it from the iconoclastic fury. It was sailing off the coast of Sicily, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, when a sudden storm threatened to wreck it. The vessel thus found refuge in Tindari. When it was time to leave, however, the ship seemed to have become too heavy to set sail. The sailors then tried to lighten the load, but only after leaving the statue of the Madonna were they able to set sail. The Madonna is currently celebrated with a great celebration on September 7th. Below the promontory lies the Oliveri Lagoon, also known as Tindari Lagoon. It is a strip of sand of exceptional beauty, today a nature reserve due to the presence of a characteristic brackish lake-type environment with marine sands. It is also a destination for tourists who go to Marinello beach which, according to legend, was formed by the will of the Virgin to save a little girl who fell from the promontory of the sanctuary.
