This video explores how the variable speed control works on a synchronous wind turbine generator.
The wind turbine hub is connected to the rotor of the generator. Generator voltage and current (AC) is between stator and rectifier. DC between rectifier and controller. AC line voltage and current between controller and transformer. The controller dictates dc current which is rectified and the AC current at the generator is modified.
When the current at the generator is modified, it causes the rotational speed of the rotor (wind turbine hub) to change because the equal-but-opposite magnetic field force is opposing. This is the key to why Current, I [A] can “control” rotational angular velocity.
