Nitish Kumar was born in 1951 in Kalyaan Bigha, Nalanda, near Harnaut. In Nitish Kumar's family, his father, Kaviraj Ram Lakhan Singh, was a well-known free fighter and his mother, Parmeshwari Devi, was a god fearing the family's wife. The initial training of Nitish Kumar was completed in Harnaut. As he grew up, he saw his father's struggle and social work.
