St. Peter’s Basilica is an Italian church in Vatican City. It is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and the largest church in the world.
The construction of the new basilica began in 1506 when the old basilica had been torn down and finished in 1626.
St. Peter’s Basilica can accommodate 20,000 people, it measures 190m long and the central nave is 46m tall. The dome stands 136m tall.
The Basilica was called St. Peter’s after one of Jesus’s twelve disciples, who became one of the founders of the Catholic Church and was executed and buried where the Basilica now stands
