पौरानिक कथाओं के अनुसार एक बार इंद्रदेव गुरु ब्रस्पति के साथ महादेव के दर्शन करने हेतु कैलाश पर्वत् जा रहे थे तभी महादेव इंद्रदेव की परिक्षा लेने हेतु एक साधु का रूप धारन कर उनके मार्ग में साधना के लिए बैट गए हे रिशिवर आप कौन है?पंरतु महादेव ने इंद्रदेव की परिक्षा लेने हेतु उन्हे उनके प्रशन का कोई उत्तर नहीं दिया ये देख कर इंद्रदेव को अतिधक क्रोध आ गया उन्होंने अपनी सस्त्तर से महादेव पर प्रहार करने का प्रयास किया इन्द्रदेव को ऐसा करता देख महादेव अत्यंत क्रोधित हो उठे
