Most people think teaching ends when the bell rings. In reality, many teachers work far more hours each week than most people expect.
Research from the RAND Corporation shows teachers in the United States average about 53 hours per week, with a large portion of that time happening outside normal school hours. In Canada, surveys show similar pressure, with teachers reporting long hours spent planning lessons, grading, paperwork, supervision duties, and responding to parents.
In this video, we break down where those hours actually go — using real data from the United States and Canada — so you can see what the weekly workload of teaching really looks like.
If you’re thinking about becoming a teacher, or just want to understand what the job actually involves week-to-week, this breakdown shows the parts of the job that most people never see.
For a deeper breakdown of teaching as a career — including pay, work environment, and long-term fit — watch the full video series on the channel.
