Steel Groove for Solo Viola by James Preucil
Steel Groove is written to be a program-starter; it’s fun, flashy, goofy, and of course groovy. When I was writing
it, I tried to balance having enough consistency in the rhythm to create a groove with using unexpected harmonies
and rhythmic variation to keep it feeling fresh the whole time. The first section is supposed to sound cool and down
to-earth, contrasted by the sweet and dreamy middle section. The last few lines take that cool feeling to a new level
with little bursts of excitement thrown in gradually until they culminate in the ending. The title of the piece is in
reference to creating as much groove as possible with steel viola strings.
