“A singer-songwriter I knew told me John Cougar had just fired his drummer. I went, ‘Ding, ding, ding. MTV, records, touring, The Beatles—this is what I always wanted.’ I ran to a pay phone, called the guitar player and said, ‘I heard you might be looking for a drummer. I want to audition.’ So, I went right to a record store, bought his records, wrote out every drum beat on every song and practiced six hours a day. I was so prepared I could play the drum parts without the music. I auditioned and it was a life-changing moment. I’m thinking, ‘I really want this gig.’ After we played two songs, John goes upstairs and yells to the guitarist—Mike Wanchic—to follow him. A few minutes later, Mike comes down, shakes my hand and says, ‘Welcome to hell.’”
