In this head-to-head comparison video, on-bike riding impressions and drive-by videos are combined with my subjective observations so you can experience the sound of these iconic machines and see what each machine is like to drive "from the saddle".
Kawasaki's 1979 KZ1000 Shaft and Suzuki's 1982 GS1100G - on paper these bikes are VERY similar and designed to do the same thing - cover lots of miles quickly and comfortably. Both of these bikes have been modified similarly to improve control, handling and safety. To keep this comparison fair, modifications to both bikes include: Progressive Suspension front springs, Speigler steel braided front brake lines, Shinko 230 tires front and rear, and Emgo's Magna Wide handlebar. The Suzuki also has a Delkevic stainless full exhaust system and Emgo Viper fairing but I didn't use sound or wind protection as a determining factors in the judging.
When I purchased each of these bikes, they were full-fairing touring bikes complete with factory fairings and saddle bags. There is a series of videos on this channel covering the process of converting each of these bikes into the machines you see here today. After improving these bikes, it was really fun comparing them back-to-back. If I only had one machine to ride for the rest of my life, I could be happy with either of these bikes - but I do pick a winner!
