Welcome to the Solix Spotlight Podcast. Host Steve Tallant, Head of Product Marketing at Solix, is joined by guest Keren Sookne, who holds an advanced graduate degree in biomimicry.
Biomimicry is the practice of mimicking biology to help solve human problems. It consists of three essential elements:
Emulate: Mimicking biological patterns.
Ethos: Appreciating and respecting nature.
Reconnect: Remembering that humans are nature.
Nature has a 3.8 billion-year head start on designing these constructs, whereas AI has only been around for a split second. While AI engines are powerful tools for discovering complex patterns in massive datasets, you need the "right human in the loop" overseeing these initiatives. Without a knowledgeable expert extracting the design principles, AI can hallucinate and make things up, leading to a "garbage in, garbage squared" result.
This episode also explores the critical difference between true biomimicry and bio-utilization. Bio-utilization involves extracting and harvesting from nature, such as bleeding horseshoe crabs to create medicines. True biomimicry does not extract; it learns from the design.
Examples of biomimicry discussed in this episode include:
An MIT spin-off company studying how barnacles adhere to wet, uneven surfaces to design a robust surgical wound glue, without physically extracting anything from the barnacles.
Studying the motion and size of humpback whales for energy generation.
Utilizing bacteria for targeted drug delivery, inducing bodily reactions, and bioleaching in mining to extract important minerals from discarded ores.
As we face tipping points and resource constraints over the next 5 to 10 years, biomimicry will become more prolific as a necessary way for us to fit in on Earth without creating more harm. This requires ethical AI, where outputs mirror what we societally want regarding compliance and standards.
