In 1966 John Lennon gave a casual interview to a London journalist and made one offhand observation about religion and popular culture. Nobody in England cared. Then an American teen magazine republished it five months later and everything exploded.
Radio stations across the Bible Belt organised public bonfires. Beatles records, albums, merchandise — all burned in the street. The KKK picketed their concerts. Death threats arrived daily. Lennon was forced to sit in front of the world's press with his hands shaking and say the one word he never believed he owed anyone — sorry.
The Beatles never toured again. The pressure broke them. Fourteen years later a fan stopped Lennon outside his home and asked for his autograph. Lennon signed it and smiled. Hours later that same man shot him dead. The man who preached peace and love his entire life never saw the world he sang about.
