Transcript: According to Electrek, Tesla is facing growing legal trouble over its Full Self-Driving claims, with a major class action now underway in Australia. Thousands of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners who bought or leased their vehicles between May 2021 and February 2025 have joined the lawsuit, alleging they were misled about the vehicle's self-driving capabilities.
The legal push comes after Elon Musk admitted earlier this year that Tesla’s Hardware 3 computer—installed in many vehicles—cannot support full autonomous driving, despite Tesla's original claims dating back to 2016 that all cars made since then had "all the hardware" needed for Full Self-Driving.
This isn’t the only case. Similar lawsuits have already been filed in the U.S. and China. Tesla has also settled multiple cases over crashes linked to its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems.
The Australian lawsuit argues customers were sold features and safety capabilities that simply didn’t exist, and they are now seeking compensation. Despite Musk's earlier promises of offering hardware upgrades, no timeline has been given for those updates, intensifying frustration among customers who paid thousands expecting a truly autonomous vehicle.
