Just decided to uploaded this RODE VideoMic Pro testing I did a while back. I picked up this high quality Shotgun mic by Rode for various purposes, but I wanted to try and mount it behind my mustang to record the Shelby GT500 Exhaust with a different GoPro External Mic than usual. I had to come up with a custom rig to mount the Rode VideoMic Pro a few feet back from the exhaust, and pointed straight at the exhaust (since shotgun mics are designed to record in one direction best).
I ended up using part of a fishing pole because it was lightweight material yet had the strength to support the weight of the Rode VideoMic Pro, which has batteries in it and weighs a bit. You can see I put my trust in the GoPro Suction Cup to support all the weight, and it actually held it on there!
If you are looking for a way to capture the exhaust note of a car on camera you may want to try a similar concoction since this worked out well for me. You could even try mounting the fishing pole directly to the vehicle if you can find a way, the suction cup worked for me. Note, I only used half of the fishing pole, the more sturdy thicker portion of it, the other half would have been far too flimsy.
Anyway, I just thought I would share the idea, results, and of course the intoxicating sounds that come from the Shelby GT500 exhaust.
I tried recording the exhaust note on a few different settings. In all there would be 6 total ways to record it since there are two separate switches. This top switch on the Rode VideoMic Pro is either, On, Off, or High Pass Filter. The bottom switch is -10dB, 0dB, +20dB.
Overall I think the Rode VideoMic Pro recorded the Shelby GT500 Exhaust best with the HPF On, and the dB level either 0, or -10. On +20 the exhaust sounds the meanest, but the audio seems to clip. Perhaps -10dB would be the best way to record it so more road noise and wind can be cut out of the original material, then the audio can be amplified later - heck I don't know, I just do this for fun.
This isn't really a thorough RODE VideoMic Pro Review, but more of a tester to see how to record a car exhaust sound. That being said, the mic is great for recording a ton of things, and it beats the heck out of the crappy built in GoPro mic. You can also get an external stereo mic for about $30 for the GoPro, which I have used, and still use in a lot of my videos. I'll show this one in a future video on this channel, so keep your eyes peeled if you are looking for options on external microphones for your GoPro, because the built in one is about the quality of what you'd find on a flip cellphone from the year 2000.
Anyway, hope you guys enjoy the sound clips of the Mustang Shelby GT500 exhaust from the RODE VideoMic Pro. Let me know what you guys think sounds the best, and what you'd like to see more of!
