South American Sea Lions & endless Cormorant flight – Nature in Chile

Описание: What a thrill to experience this colony of Southern Sea Lions at Huiro on Costa de Corral, about 40 km south of Valdivia, Chile. You could hear (and smell) the colony from 1 km away. We clambered out onto the rocky shoals, safely separated from the Sea Lions by about 30 meters of surf. This is the South American Sea Lion (Otaria flavescens), also known as Patagonian Sea Lion. The huge 350 kg adult males are about the twice the size of females. Pups are greyish orange ventrally and black dorsally and moult into a more chocolate color. There was a massive nonstop flight of cormorants along the coast, streaming low across the water in the background. These would be Red-legged Cormorants (Phalocrocorax gaimardi), Neotropic Cormorants (P. brasilianus), and possibly Guanay (P.. bougainvillii), or Rock Cormorant (P. magellanicus). Note also the Turkey Vultures here and there between the sea lions! Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures seem to enjoy the company of Sea Lions. The beetle is a Longhorned Beetle (Acanthinodera cumingii). The species is endemic to central Chile and goes by the name Madre de la Culebra (mother of the snake). The female is black (as shown) and at 9 cm in length is one of the largest beetles in Chile.
