Finishing the Double Knuckler Hammer

Taber Nash and Jason Momoa worked together to get more of Jason's design concept into this latest design. After the success of the original Knuckle Hammer, they released the Double-Knuckle; a less-refined, more-rugged hammer piece of this Nash/Momoa collaboration series. In this video we see Taber Nash taking a completed (cast) hammer head and creating by hand one of the unique double Knuckler Hammers. The Double Knuckle hammer is 1.5 pounds and 13-1/2 inches tall.

0:08 Taber Nash uses the KMG-TX belt grinder 2x72 from Beaumont Metal Works with its Rotary Platen Attachment for professional grinding and sanding results. A green J-flex aluminum oxide abrasive belt in 600 grit is used to finely finish the convex surface of the Double Knuckler hammer head.

0:22 A soft finishing wheel is used on the Jet industrial buffer to polish the dual hammer faces and bring the steel to a smooth almost mirror finish

0:58 A propane blow torch is used to impart the distinctive Nash/Momoa char pattern by hand onto the hickory wood handle. Hickory wood is tough – hickory is one of the densest and strongest American domestic hardwoods. The hand charring is one of the features that makes each and every Double Knuckle hammer custom and unique.

1:32 The hammer head is prepared in a vise for hand marking. Double Knuckler hammers are hand stamped with both the “On the Roam” logo from Jason Momoa and the Nash Motorcycle logo.

1:42 Here, Taber Nash is setting the custom steel stamp set to imprint a number between 1 and 100 on the hammer head.

2:35 The Double Knuckler hammer head is set onto the hickory wood handle. The wedge is shape and sanded to ensure a proper fit, and is installed with wood glue.

3:40 The excess amount of the wedged handle and kerf is marked so that it can be cut off using a vertical band saw. A small amount of the wedged handle protrudes, but not enough to extend past the top of the hammer face.

4:10 Taber Nash cleans up the completed Double Knuckle and lightly oils the wooden handle.

4:35 The Double Knuckle hammer is inspected and presented, ready to use and adoption by the owner’s community.
