Gravely Walk Behind Tractor - Replacing Fan Belt, Starter Chain, Starter Sprocket,

Описание: This is part 1 in a series where we go through the old 1968 Gravely Custom Convertible 7.6 HP L8 Walk-Behind Tractor I used to cut grass with as a kid. The jury is out about what type of tractor this actually is; whether it is a Custom or a Convertible I'm not sure, but it is a 7.6 HP with the vertical spark plug no doubt. I know Dad had a Gravely with a pull rope manual start in my early years and I can only assume that this is the same tractor but converted to electric start but I’m not 100% positive. The tractor in the black and white picture is a manual start but the decal is different and the older tractor has a fuel bowl under the tank.

This tractor has sat exposed to the weather for several years and I believe the last time it ran was around 2007. I expected some difficulty getting it going but there seems to be no end to the problems I’m having to repair along the way to completing this project. Of course the battery had to be replaced and the replacement battery was dead, the fan belt/governor belt was missing and had to be replaced (Gates A29), The starter chain (Sprocket Chain) was rusted nearly solid and had to be removed and soaked in used motor oil, the fan belt was replaced, the starter gear/starter motor sprocket was missing teeth so I welded and ground new teeth on the sprocket after removing the sprocket from the starter, then reinstalled the starter on the tractor. Now she spins over, let’s see where it takes us next!

Since I already have enough footage for part 2, I'll tell you that I have a dead short in the electrical system and I end up having to pull the magneto, replace the kill switch, condenser and points; but where is the short? Stay tuned to find out!
