Whenever there's a Shakespeare category on Jeopardy! I check out.

I just don't see what all the hype is about.

But this isn't your typical Shakespearian movie.

But was the story for this movie TOO simple? Too basic?

It's set in the 16th century, but they speak 20th century English.

I mean, it's all written out there in the description on IMBD, but weirdly enough, that synopsis, the main crux of the story, doesn't really start until 2/3 of the way in.

I called another movie this year melodramatic --- oh, yeah, it was The War of the Worlds, because of its refusal to have any fun.

But Hamnet takes melodrama to a whole other level.
THere's just so much crying in this movie.
Like, lots of loud, crying.

And yes, the reasons for the wailing was justified, that's really what the movie was about - the mourning of losing loved ones.

And childbirth.

And let me tell you, if I have nothing else good to say about this movie, Jessie Buckley who plays Shakespeare wife, Agnes, she can sell a hard cry.

She commits to movie crying like it's a marriage vow.

It's impressive.

Like, the director said, "Give me the ugliest, loudest cry you can possibly give."

That, or he killed her dog, and that got the ugly cries from her.

I liked the resolution of this movie, which explains why the title of this movie isn't Hamlet, but Hamnet.

It's probably going to win some big awards, or it'll be the runner up, because it's just - that type of movie: Emotional, devastating, raw.

Other than that, it's just another one of those movies that shows the progression of life through two lovebirds, and who start a family, and kicks that whole circle of life thing off.

I don't know, just not my cup of tea.
I prefer twists and turns, and unexpected surprises.

This was just.... Life in the 16th century.

Unless you're really into art imitating life - and/or Shakespeare stuff - I suggest stuffing Hamnet down at the bottom of your watchlist, and hope you never get to it.

I just - I'm not going to explain myself - there are people who will really like this movie, and you know who you are - you'll be able to tell right away from the poster.

I'm just not one of those people.
