2. The ruins of Angkor Wat are so much bigger than you think.
Angkor Wat is the heart and soul of Cambodia.

The grounds of the temple cover an area of more than 500 acres.
That’s about 50 times larger than the site of Machu Picchu!
3. Cambodia has a terrible past that has scarred the people and country.
During the four years of the Khmer Rouge’s rule, around 2 million people were brutally killed.
To put that in perspective, that’s about one fifth of the population!
Because of the genocide that took place from 1975-1979, up to 65% of Cambodia’s population is under thirty.
4. You can learn so much from the locals.
There are lots of opportunities to take part in a home stay or take a trek through the jungle and learn more about rural life in Cambodia.
It’s an amazing experience if you can befriend a local and get them to show you the wonderful sites of Cambodia.

Traditional Cambodian weddings are a mix of celebration, glamorous garments and a non-stop partying that can go for up to three days and three nights!
6. Cambodians celebrate the New Year in April.
Cambodian New Year celebrations are held in April every year and marks the end of the traditional harvest season.
Be prepared to get wet as water fly’s everywhere!
Locals celebrate by having a water fight that’s got to be experienced at least once in your life.
This is the biggest celebration of the year in Cambodia.
7. The noisy Geckos.
Cambodians believe that counting a gecko’s chirp will tell you if you’re lucks in and you will marry soon.
It is considered good luck if a Tokay Gecko lets out seven or more calls in the same room as you.
8. Insects are eaten in Cambodia.
While Cambodians are renowned for cooking up creepy crawlies such as crickets, ants and even tarantulas, most people eat fish, vegetables and rice as part of their daily diet.
Visit some of the markets and you will find an array of insects to taste.
Not for the faint hearted though.
9. Home to the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.
The Tonle Sap provides irrigation to nearly half of Cambodia’s crops and is a major source for fishing and fun.
The amazing thing about this lake is that, large parts regenerate during the wet season when the monsoon rain falls and floods the central area between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.
10. Tuk Tuks are the easy way to get around.
The first thing you’ll see when you arrive in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh is the long line of tuk tuks at the airport and you will find them waiting at nearly every street corner around town.
While the journey can get your heart pumping, road rules (or seemingly lack of them) are thrown out the window, but it’s a quicker way to navigate throughout the streets.
You should always remember to negotiate the price before getting in or you will be charged more than normal!
