In this episode of the Focus On project, we spend the day with Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade and take a closer look at how Britain’s only remaining volunteer fire brigade operates in 2026.

Founded in 1884, the brigade has protected the city of Peterborough for well over a century and remains fiercely proud of its history and independence. What started as a Victorian volunteer brigade has evolved into a modern, professional emergency response organisation.

Today, the crew respond to around 400 emergency calls every year. From fires and road traffic collisions to special service calls, they operate alongside Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service while remaining entirely volunteer led.

We take a detailed look at their Scania Emergency One pumping appliance, their equipment, their station, and what it really means to serve on an on-call volunteer crew.

Chief Fire Officer Anthony Gould explains how the brigade maintains standards, training and operational readiness while preserving the heritage that makes Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade so unique.
