Guantanamo Bay preparing for long term operation

"The people we have in here now are accused of executing, planning, events that killed Americans. If they could have been redistributed to other countries or released or transferred, they would have been."  Says Rear Admiral John Ring with the Joint Task Force.
Ring is tasked with a new mission. After the Obama administration's failed attempt to shutter the detention facility, President Trump is reversing course, signing an executive order earlier this year to keep operations in Cuba going.  
"So, in order to execute that mission, I have to make some investments."  Says Ring.
The military is spending millions to make Guantánamo more permanent. $12 Million for a new dining facility, over $8 million for a new detainee medical wing, and $115 million has been approved to replace deteriorating barracks in order to house the JTF's some 1,200 soldiers.
"The facilities here need to be able to support that long term mission." Says Commander Anne Leanos.
Also, the detainees are in need of better access to medical care as they age. Admiral Ring is looking to get a new $69 million facility to replace camp 7, where 15 high-value detainees are held which would include improved medical facilities.  
"We know that we're going to be in a wheelchair situation sooner rather than later. So, a new facility, a new camp 8 would replace the current capacity and would have the ability to have, maybe roll a hospital bed in there. Definitely get a wheelchair in there, have medical facilities there." Says Ring.  
Congress still needs to approve the money for camp.
