Highlights from the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games as the USA women's 4x100m team of Mae Faggs, Catherine Hardy, Barbara Jones and Janet Moreau set a new world record as they win the gold medal.
The Helsinki Games saw many records fall, including the women's 4x100 metres at the Athletics stadium, which was broken both at the qualifying heats and once again in the final.
The Australian team had qualified in first place with a World Record time of 46.1seconds. In the same heat as the Aussie team was the defending champion team of the Netherlands, who took the last spot in the final with 47.1s.
The other four teams to make it to the finals were Germany (46.3s), United States (46.5s), Great Britain (46.6s) and the Soviet Union (46.7s). From those times it was easy to imagine that the final would be a close challenge.
At the final change over the American team who had the lead, with Catherine Hardy taking to the finish just ahead of the German team, both with clocked times of 45.9s a new Olympic and world record. The British team completed the podium at 46.2, with the Soviets right behind at 46.3s.
