Today I will discuss the effects of the shape of the skull on our ability to sleep. The direction of the growth of the face is important to our ability to breathe. When we keep our mouth closed and breathe through our nose our tongue has the opportunity to fill the mouth placing pressure on the upper and lower jaws to encourage proper forward face growth. If our tongue sits low in the mouth because we used to suck our thumb, or we had allergies that forced us to breathe lower our tongues through our mouths, or we have a short lingual frenum then the tongue cannot put pressure on the mouth and the lips and cheeks will continue to put so much pressure that the jaw may stay small and narrow and the teeth crowded. Then the jaw may partially block the airway causing the tongue to sit in the airway causing reduced breathing, snoring and even sleep apnea.
