Today I show you how to eat ginkgo nuts from the Ginkgo biloba tree. These trees are planted all over as shade trees and beauty trees. In the fall, the repulsive stench of their fruit is unmistakable. Inside the stinky fruit is a delicious nut. To me it tastes creamy with a taste of sharp cheese. Several words of warning: The flesh of the fruit contains urushiol, the same compound that’s in poison ivy, so make sure not to touch the fruit with your bare hands. I use gloves in the video. The raw seeds are toxic due to high levels of ginkgotoxin AKA 4’-O-methylpyridoxine. Cooking the nuts decreases the amount of toxin present, but it’s still there. Ginkgo has many health benefits, but you shouldn’t eat more than 10 nuts in a day. Don’t eat them every day. Children should have no more than 5. And people with a Vitamin B6 deficiency shouldn’t eat any at all. Practice safe foraging by only harvesting plants you can 100% identify.
