"True Colours" anti-bullying presentation by grade 4 and 5 Manor Park students - 2013

This is the "Beta" version of my grade 4 and 5 students from Manor Park PS in Ottawa performing their presentation of "True Colours" which was originally performed at our school wide anti-bullying assembly this week. It is a powerful presentation which left many staff in tears and made a strong impact on staff, parents and students alike. It was actually fellow staff-members Kendra Durnford and Chantal Leger who suggested that we post this to YouTube, and even send it on to The Ellen Show. Thank you ladies!

The first words are shown on black to represent how hurtful words can make us feel on the inside. Students chose words that showed something they had been teased about or bullied about. The second set of words are on pink paper to represent standing up against bullying, and the words are those of support for anyone being bullied or singled out. The final words in rainbow colours represent something that students feel they excel at, or are proud of. The video is not perfect, and the school bell rings in the background at the end, but the children were SO excited to show their families, so here is the best version I have! If I can get a better video camera (instead of my iphone), we will redo this (along with the original dance that accompanied the piece, performed by Mme. Dennis' class) and I will re-post. A final thanks to Lisa Hotte and Miquela Skinner for helping out and sharing their time with me.

For now, I just want to say how proud I am of my classes for being so candid and brave with their very personal words and messages. Someone has to take a stand against bullying, and these students show that message in a powerful and moving presentation. I hope you enjoy the video, and please feel free to share with as many people as you like.
