Angela Lansbury is best known as Jessica Fletcher on "Murder, She Wrote." But off-screen, she faced a real-life nightmare. In the 1960s, her teenage daughter Deidre fell in with the wrong crowd in Malibu, California .
That crowd was led by Charles Manson. Before he became infamous for the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders, Manson was a charismatic drifter who attracted young, impressionable followers. Deidre was fascinated by him .
Lansbury later told the Daily Mail: "It pains me to say it but, at one stage, Deidre was in with a crowd led by Charles Manson. She was one of many youngsters who knew him — and they were fascinated" .
Both Deidre and her brother Anthony were also using hard drugs. Lansbury and her husband Peter Shaw felt helpless. They decided to take drastic action. Lansbury said, "I said to Peter, 'We have to leave'" .
In 1970, the family moved to a house in County Cork, Ireland. Lansbury turned down all work for a year. She cooked and gardened and focused entirely on her children. The move worked. Anthony recovered quickly. Deidre took longer but eventually got married and opened an Italian restaurant in Los Angeles .
Lansbury later said: "I have no doubt we would have lost one or both of our two if they hadn't been removed to a completely different milieu, the simplicity of life in Ireland" .
The deadbeat was Charles Manson. The murderer. The cult leader.
Angela Lansbury saved her daughter's life by moving across an ocean.
