The boy-child cries out for attention as we focus on the girl-child. Boys too have suffered immensely from child-rights abusers. If we do not target them in our empowerment efforts, they will become a liability someday if not already. The gains made in empowering the girl-child will be lost at the marriage negotiating table. They will be marrying a disempowered man who will batter them for a general lack of appreciation of partnering with an empowered woman.
This is a case drawn from Pader district in Uganda where both boys and girls have suffered immensely following the 20 years of insurgency. Some of these were born and raised by parents who lost hope while others are orphaned. Their dilemma remains- why do people focus on our sisters only yet all of us face the same challenges.
International Aid Services Uganda is offering part of the answer through skilling of out-of-school boys and girls- under the self-help project code-named- Bonga. 20-30 boys form a group and they are given literacy and numeracy skills coupled with life skills and finally occupational skills for self-reliance.
