India-Bangladesh relations appear to be entering a new phase after the formation of a new democratic government in Dhaka. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken key steps that are being viewed as positive signals toward New Delhi. The Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi has resumed visa services for Indian citizens after a two-month suspension, while India is also in the process of restoring full visa services for Bangladeshi nationals.
Tensions had escalated in December following political unrest and anti-India protests in Bangladesh. However, recent developments — including diplomatic outreach and high-level engagement — suggest efforts to rebuild trust. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla attended Rahman’s oath ceremony and handed over a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, inviting him to visit India.
