At the end of the 17th century, this Chaconne attributed to the great Italian Baroque composer Tommaso Antonio Vitali (1663 - 1745, Baroque) is far more than a simple instrumental piece.
In that era, the chaconne was both a dance form and a structure built upon repeating bass patterns, allowing variations to unfold above them. It was a genre particularly suited to expressing the cyclical nature of fate and the depths of human anguish through music.
In this work, Vitali alternates between the profound darkness of the minor mode and fleeting rays of light in the major, distilling the Baroque worldview of life and death, suffering and redemption into sound.
Originally written for violin and basso continuo, today this narrative is reinterpreted through the voice of the piano.
