In this tutorial, we work carefully through Paper 1, Question 2 for First Language English Reading, in line with the examination requirements from 2027 onwards. The lesson is designed to show students exactly how marks are awarded and how to approach both parts of the question with confidence and precision.
The video begins with Question 2(a): Summary Writing. You will learn how to identify the precise focus of the task, which in this paper is the arguments against cloning as a method of protecting endangered species, such as the Takhi horse. I explain how the 15 marks are divided, with 10 marks for reading and 5 for writing, and what this means in practice. We go step by step through the source text, annotating, numbering and reshaping ideas so that students can select 10 distinct, relevant points, including both explicit and implicit meanings. You will see how to combine related ideas where appropriate, rephrase details accurately in your own words, and organise the summary into a single, coherent paragraph within the word limit. Particular attention is given to topic sentences, logical sequencing and clear transitions.
The tutorial then moves on to Question 2(b): Author’s Attitude, worth 5 marks. Here, the focus is on analysing how the writer feels about cloning endangered animals and how those attitudes are conveyed. I model how to identify attitudes such as frustration, excitement and acceptance, link them clearly to reasons, and support each point with precise evidence from the text. You will also learn how to select the most relevant three attitudes from the passage and structure your response so that it meets Reading Assessment Objectives R2 and R3.
Throughout the lesson, marking criteria are explained in student-friendly terms, so learners understand exactly what examiners are looking for and how to move into the top bands. This tutorial is ideal for students preparing for IGCSE First Language English, as well as teachers looking for a clear, classroom-ready breakdown of Question 2.
