This is a practical guide to perform CFD simulations of a wind turbine with ANSYS Fluent (v19.1). However it is recorded real-time, so that a very coarse mesh is generated to save time. Most notably, blade leading and trailing edges are not adequately resolved. A much finer mesh, beyond the capability of typical PCs, must be created than the mesh shown in the video such that further refining the mesh does not change the results significantly. Moreover, validation against representative experimental data is required; either in-house experiments or experimental data of a similar turbine reported in the literature.
Nevertheless, many engineers and/or students do not have powerful workstations, so the guidelines in this video may be used as a practical tool to assess performance of wind turbines, reserving above issues. Assoc.Prof.Sercan Acarer
