How to Measure a Land

Measurement Units

In Metric System, land is measured using Are and Hectare. This is the principal unit of land measurement.
However, most of the place’s lands are measured using square feet and converted to Acre, Cents, Are, Hectare etc.
Links & square Chains also used to measure lands in some places.

Units in Length
1 Link = 0.66 feet & 100 links = 1 Chain
1 Chain = 20.1168 meters & 1 Chain = 66 Feet
1 Meter = 3.28 Feet

Units in Area
1 Are = 100 Square Meters = 0.0247 Acre.
1 Square Meter = 10.76 Square Feet
1 Square Chain = 4356 Square Feet
1 Cent = 435.6 Square Feet
100 Cents = 43560 Square Feet = 1 Acre

Steps to follow

Inspect all the boundaries and draw a sketch of the land.
Connect only the boundaries (out side) & measure only the boundaries in feet if the shape is square or rectangle.
Connect all the boundaries and form all possible triangles and measure all the lengths in feet if the shape is irregular.
Use the formula, Area = length * Breadth if the shape is rectangle.
Use the formula, Area = √(𝑺(𝒔−𝒂)(𝒔−𝒃)(𝒔−𝒄) ) and calculate the area of each triangles and find the sum of the areas if the shape is rectangle.
S = (a + b + c)/2

Complete Area = Sum of area of all triangles

Convert the area from square feet to required unit using the conversion formula.

To Cents & Acres
Area = 8997.16 Square Feet
1 Cent = 435.6 Sq. Ft. So its 20.65 Cents
100 Cents = 1 Acre so its 0.2065 Acres

To Sq. meters & Sq. Chains

1 Sq. Meter = 10.76 Sq. Ft. So its 836.17 Sq. Mts
