About Tom Interval
Tom Interval, owner of Interval Magic, is a San Diego-based professional magician who provides magic entertainment and training to private and corporate clients locally and nationally. A member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM), Society of American Magicians (SAM), and Academy of Magical Arts (AMA), he has captivated audiences at numerous venues in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Virginia, San Diego, and along the East Coast with his brand of highly visual, interactive, mind-boggling magic.
Having taught private and public magic lessons since 1985, Interval developed Reading Magic (www.readingmagic.org), a nonprofit, curriculum-based program designed to inspire children to read about a multitude of academic subjects while developing useful life skills learned through the study of magic. Since moving to San Diego, he has taken a keen interest in the mechanics of perception and neuroscience as it relates to magic and has recently partnered with cognitive scientist Dr. Iris Oved in helping to develop Magic and the Mind (www.magicandthemind.org), an enrichment program using magicians' techniques to teach students about the psychology and neuroscience of deception.
Interval also has worked with authors, actors, and producers, who have consulted him about magic and the legendary escape artist Harry Houdini. One of his most recent projects included his participation in the History Channel's Houdini miniseries, starring Adrien Brody and Kristen Connolly. Connolly consulted Interval about Bess Houdini, whom she portrayed in the series, and learned a playing-card flourish from him called the ribbon-spread turnover, often performed by magicians and cardsharps.
Interval has a BA in professional writing and minors in communications and management from La Roche College in Pittsburgh. He has authored an e-book about an obscure 19th-century Irish magician named Harry Houdin (not to be confused with Harry Houdini), written instructional articles for international magic journals, and worked full time in the field of marketing communications. A Houdini fan and historian, Interval conceived and created the Houdini Museum website and associated blog (www.houdinimuseum.org) and is working on several other magic-related writing and website projects.
