The Battle of Khe Sanh was one of the major battles of the Vietnam War, fought from January 21 to July 9, 1968, at the Khe Sanh Combat Base near the Laos border in South Vietnam.
U.S. Marine and their allies defended the Khe Sanh base.
The base was surrounded and besieged by the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), the military force of North Vietnam.
The siege lasted about 77 days, involving heavy artillery bombardment, mortar attacks, and ground assaults.
The United States maintained the defense mainly through massive airpower and continuous aerial resupply.
The siege was eventually broken when U.S. forces launched a relief operation in April 1968.
However, a few months later the United States decided to abandon and destroy the Khe Sanh base.
Khe Sanh was a major 1968 siege where U.S. forces held out against North Vietnamese attacks for more than two months before the base was eventually abandoned.
